There are quite a few versions to be considered:

Grateful Dead performed the tune 146 times..

I guess the recorded version from Shakedown Street makes it 147(and it isn't too shabby either)

Of course, there have many, many versions of this tune recorded over the years.

Start late '78 and go through '79. Then you tell us!

Absolutely correct. Never on the same page w/ the tune.
UNTIL ......later on.
Listen to Jerry's vocals .... and to the solo break he takes on this one to end the tune! There's depth and subtlety here not found in 70s versions, which always sounded like 'run-throughs' to me.

Good call. I think it peaked in '78, but not at all a bad first set tune during the 90s.

It was featured on GDH #231 back in the day. Also included were some other first set tunes from that performance that I also thought were exceptional. My favorite 'Masterpiece' is from the same night for example.
The context of the performances and their being featured on a GDH was that the band had only recently started performing again after a cancelled fall tour. Seems to me there was some exceptional playing in Dec '92 perhaps due to the unit being rested and maybe even having missed performing somewhat. My favorite Peggy-O is from earlier in Dec of that year in Denver (also featured on a different GDH around that time).
There's a calm (for lack of a better word), grounded sweetness to these performances that I have always attributed to that 6-month break from what had become by '92 a remarkably rigid touring routine.
I'm glad you enjoyed it.

That was the only song from that show that stepped out and went somewhere. I aways thought it was pretty funny that Stagger Lee was the best song of the show. The outro jam is great!

I drove down from SEA with a carload of Dead virgins. They were more blown away by the scene than the show.
